HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - While the Celebrations of Lights could not be held this year in Hastings, downtown is getting into the holiday spirit with a new tradition.

People may notice large decorated stockings in the windows for small businesses. Over 70 wooden stockings were decorated by businesses, nonprofits, and members of the community. The Downtown Center Association sold them for just $5 to join in the contest.

“We sold out of the stockings, the first 20 we had, on the first day. So we scrambled and made sure we were making more and we topped out at 73,” Director Tammy Orthmann said. “But if we had made 100 we would have sold 100.”

People will get to vote on their favorite one starting next week. The Downtown Center Association hopes it brings a little fun to downtown.

“I always try to tell people we didn’t cancel Christmas, we still want to celebrate the holidays,” Orthmann said. “Everything is different this year so we had to do everything in a different manner. The stockings have sparked a lot of interest.”

Out of the three categories of stockings, the ones who get the most votes will get a prize. Ballots can be picked up at Jacobi’s and people can walk or drive around to see the stockings from first to third street in the windows.
