Community steps up to “Adopt a Senior” from The Kensington
HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - At The Kensington in Hastings, the residents have been dealing with not getting to see family due to health safety risks. Management decided to let the public “Adopt a Senior” this holiday season.
One post on Facebook looking for people to adopt a senior led to over 100 comments of people volunteering to send a gift to a Kensington resident. In less than 24 hours all residents were spoken for.
With doors locked to the public and quarantine rules for residents who leave the building, many have not been with family in person for weeks. While The Kensington connects family members through video or a window, they wanted to let the public make their Christmas a little extra special.
“We’ve had a lot of people reach out with activities they would be happy to come perform in our parking lot or some sing Christmas carols in our parking lot,” Senior Living Consultant Krista Finley said. “We were just really excited to do this ‘Adopt a Senior’ because it was a time people could help us.”
People will be given a list from one of the 64 residents to find a gift for them to open on Christmas day. Finley said it has been hard for residents to miss holidays and birthdays with loved ones. Seeing so many people wanting to brighten a senior’s day means a lot to the residents.
“So much has changed here. We’re used to being able to go out and about and do fun things and family can come and go any time they want,” Finley said. “That was all taken away from them. With schools sending us letters and letting us know that they’re thinking of us has been huge.”
The Kensington has been coming up with creative ways to entertain the residents and make them feel loved and supported. Finley said the spirits of the residents remain high despite the challenges.
“It’s been tough not seeing families, it’s been tough for everybody but we’re doing the best we can to keep everybody happy and busy,” Finley said.
She also said the pandemic will be around for some time so the people who didn’t get to adopt a senior could get another chance in the future. Those who did volunteer to adopt a senior will be getting more information and their senior’s list in the coming weeks.
