DAWSON COUNTY, Neb. (KSNB) - Eastbound Interstate 80 between Brady and Cozad is back open after a large grass fire in Dawson County forced a closure Thursday.

Nebraska State Patrol said eastbound I-80 was closed at the Brady exit for over an hour. Traffic had to be diverted to Highway 30. Westbound I-80 remained open at the time.

The fire spanned 4.5 miles along Paulsen’s gravel pit (Willow Island Road) in Gothenburg.

There is no damage to structures.

NSP thanked area local fire departments from Lexington, Cozad and Gothenburg, and others for getting the fire under control.

They said this is the time of year “we start to see grassfires across Nebraska.” Please be aware of fire danger. They said it doesn’t take much to start a grassfire.

NSP shared dash video near Gothenburg showing how quickly these fires can move.

NSP said “Thankfully the trooper was aware of his surroundings, while moving traffic into the outer lane, and was able to get away.”
