Heat mixed with a few cooldowns in the week ahead

HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Much of the areas will see a mainly sunny and hot day with highs into the low to mid 90s. Later this afternoon, showers and thunderstorms may fire across far Northern Nebraska, mainly along and north of highway 20. A few strong to severe storms may be possible for those areas later this afternoon and this evening. Some large hail and damaging wind gusts will be possible. The rest of the area will remain quiet with mostly clear skies. Lows will drop into the 60s to around 70°.
By tomorrow morning, a cold front will move into Northwest Nebraska. That front will slowly advance southeastward through the area during the day Tuesday and Tuesday night. Showers and thunderstorms are expected along that front, especially in the afternoon and evening. The timing of the front will be important for 1) who has the better chances for rain and 2) how warm or cool it will be for your area. For now we’ll go with highs ranging from the upper 70s northwest to the low/mid 90s southeast. Along with the good chance for rain with come a low-end chance for severe storms. Large hail and strong wind gusts will be the main threats. Much of the rain and thunderstorm activity should be done by daybreak Wednesday. Low temperatures early Wednesday morning will drop into the mid 50s to mid 60s.
Wednesday will be a nice break from the heat with partly cloudy skies. Highs on Wednesday will range from the upper 70s northeast to the upper 80s in the far west. Thursday will be sunny and breezy as heat starts to return. Highs on Thursday will range from the upper 80s northeast to the mid/upper 90s west. Friday will be hot and breezy again ahead of the next approaching cold front. Highs will range from the upper 80s northwest to the upper 90s southeast. There will be a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms during the day and a slightly better chance Friday evening.
The weekend should be nice and a bit cooler. Under partly cloudy skies and a small chance of rain, highs will range from the upper 70s northwest to the upper 80s southeast. Winds will be a bit breezy again. Under mostly sunny skies, Sunday will feature highs mostly in the mid to upper 80s.
