HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Skies are starting off mainly cloudy for a large part of the area. As the day goes on, clouds with diminish with more sunshine expected later in the day. There is a small chance for some pop-up showers in Eastern Nebraska. High temperatures will range from the upper 70s northeast to the upper 80s out west. There will already be more heat in the Panhandle and that heat will spread eastward to end the week. For tonight, there’s a small chance of an isolated thunderstorm out west this evening, then later in the night there’s a chance in Northeast Nebraska. The rest of the area will remain mostly clear. Lows will drop back into the upper 50s and lower 60s.

Thursday will be sunny and breezy as heat starts to return. South winds of 12 to 22 mph with gusts to 30 mph will push highs back above average for most. Highs will range from the upper 80s east to around 100° west. Once again later Thursday night into Friday morning, an isolated shower or thunderstorm can’t be ruled out. A better chance will come later in the day. Highs on Friday will range from the upper 80s north to the upper 90s in North Central Kansas. A cold front will be moving in and passing south through the area Friday night. This could trigger more showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening. The storms will begin in the west and northwest and traverse east southeastward. Severe thunderstorms are fairly likely during the evening and overnight, especially near and north/east of the Tri-CIties. Damaging wind gusts will be the primary threat. Secondary threats include some large hail and perhaps an isolated tornado. Periods of heavy rain will also be possible.

The weekend will be noticeably cooler behind the cold front. On Saturday, there may still be some showers and isolated thunderstorms around. A few may even linger around Saturday night and Sunday. High temperatures on Saturday will mostly be in the 70s and lower 80s. On Sunday, highs will still mostly be in the 70s and lower 80s. Monday will be sunnier and the beginning of our next warm up. Highs will range from the lower 80s in the east to around 90° out west. It’ll be a bit warmer yet on Tuesday with highs in the upper 80s and low to mid 90s. There is a slight chance for showers and thunderstorms Tuesday and Tuesday night.
