Plenty of heat and very little moisture in the days ahead
July 23, 2021 Afternoon Forecast
HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - It’s gonna be a hot afternoon on your way home from work.
Expect plenty of sunshine along with breezy south southwest winds this afternoon at 10 to 20 mph. Temperatures will be heating up into the low to mid 90s this afternoon, although out west, it will warm into the upper 90s to near 100°. Dew points won’t be terribly high outside of eastern Nebraska, so most won’t see heat index values get above 100°. In southeast Nebraska, heat index values of 100° to 105° will be possible. Late today and into tonight there may be a few strong thunderstorms in our far northwestern counties. A severe storm can’t be ruled out. Through the overnight, some clouds will be on the increase from the northwest. Along with that, a few showers may hold together as they approach the I-80 corridor by tomorrow morning. A couple of scattered light showers may linger tomorrow, and even in the afternoon, some isolated showers or sprinkles will still be possible. Otherwise, it’ll be a partly cloudy day. The morning will start with temperatures in the upper 60s and low to mid 70s. It’ll heat up to the low to mid 90s tomorrow afternoon. Any rain may provide for a bit of a cooldown.
Heading into the second half of the weekend, the best chance of showers and thunderstorms will come Sunday and Sunday night. Some may linger into Monday morning. There’s still quite a bit of uncertainty on how exactly the chance for showers and thunderstorms will play out. Forecast models show anything from nothing to several showers and thunderstorms. A few strong storms would be possible. Meanwhile, temperatures on Sunday will be a little cooler with highs in the upper 80s and lower 90s. Monday should be similar, although there may be a few mid 90s out west.
Tuesday through Thursday, heat will really establish itself in the area. Tuesday and Wednesday will both be quite sunny. Highs on Tuesday will push into the mid to upper 90s with a few near 100° in the north and west. Wednesday may end out being the hottest day next week. Highs on Wednesday will push to between 96° and 104°. Thursday will still pretty toasty with highs from around 90° in the north to near 100° in the south. It may cool down just a little bit for the end of the week as slight chances for thunderstorms return to the forecast.
There will be a hot stretch of weather for much of the area through the rest of the month. Along with that, chances for rain will be on short supply.
