HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - While investigations continue into the shooting death of 28-year-old Santino Rey Gonzalez, loved ones came together to remember his legacy in Hastings Wednesday night.

A vigil was held for Gonzalez at Brickyard Park in Hastings. Family members from Florida, along with loved ones in Hastings all gathering to remember Gonzalez’s life. There was food, an auction, candle lighting and a prayer from a local pastor. Family members stood together and comforted each other while tears were shed. Family members even released a dove in Gonzalez’s honor.

Gonzalez’s sister Elley Cabrera flew in from Florida as well. She was humbled by the community presence at the vigil but said the family is looking for justice to be served. Cabrera said, “My brother did not deserve to go out the way he did, he did not deserve that for any reason. I honestly hope that justice is served for him, and of course, I want his legacy to continue amongst the community that has came out here to support us, and has given us love and support for the situation.”

Betsy Hultquist, the mother of Gonzalez’s daughter, also attended the event with their daughter. Hultquist wants the money raised from the vigil to go towards Santino Rey Gonzalez’s funeral fund. “Trying to get as much support as we can, you know, this is a very unexpected loss that this family is enduring. We really kind of need the support of our community right now as we pay for his final expenses and say goodbye.” said Hultquist.

In the meantime, local prosecutors are waiting for more information from investigators in the shooting death of Gonzalez, as no charges have been made yet.
