HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - New teachers in Hastings are about to get a warm welcome from its community. On Sunday, the Hastings Chamber of Commerce plans to welcome nearly 75 new educators to the area for a welcome event at the Hastings YMCA miniature golf course.

The Chamber will be hosting a dinner and a meet-and-greet type of evening for them in hopes that the new teachers in town know their community is behind them.

“We do this to give new educators the opportunity to interact with each other and meet other people in case they are new to the community and just to give them a nice support system,” said Nichole Rundle, the Program Coordinator for the chamber.

The event will include new educators not only from the local high schools and elementary schools, but also new staff at CCC-Hastings as well as Hastings College. With this in mind, scheduling an event like this can be difficult.

“You know, this time of year is crazy for everyone, and it’s always hard to find time to fit teacher’s schedules into our schedules,” Rundle said. “As business professionals, we plan around them, we hope that our schedules work with theirs, but sometimes it doesn’t always match up. We really hope they do, and administrators always have good support of this as well.”

For teachers who can’t make it Sunday, the chamber did still think of them.

“Earlier this week, our committee members delivered goodie bags of things, promotional materials and things from businesses that they had donated, so we delivered those to the schools for teachers who aren’t able to attend so they can still get those goodie bags and be able to have those gifts,” Rundle said.

While this year is all about the miniature golf at the YMCA in town, Rundle says they try to change things up each year to keep the annual event fresh.

“This is an event we do every year, and it’s not always the mini golf. We change. A couple of years ago we did a baseball thing with the Sodbusters, we had a night with them, and sometimes we do a dinner at local places that teachers could also use as field trips.”

The event will run from 5-7 p.m. Sunday as chamber officials hope to kick the year off right for Hastings educators.
