GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - A family who worked 500 hours constructing houses was handed over the keys to their own home Saturday afternoon. A Habitat for Humanity home dedication ceremony was held at Lincoln Elementary around 2 p.m. where the staff, volunteers and guests congratulated a family of five on the hard work they’d put in to get them their new home.

Serafin and Adriana Martinez put in hours to build their home and other Habitat family homes. The two worked alongside Kevin Rodeman, the organization site supervisor, who oversees construction of the homes and the families working on them. Rodeman said, constructing a home is never easy, but it served a deep purpose for him as well as the Habitat families.

“Not just Serafin and Adriana, but the other partner families come together and they work together hand-in-hand and it’s just a community,” he said.

Working so many hours with the two, Rodeman said they made some close bonds with Serafin and Adriana Martinez.

“To me, they’re brother and sister now, you know, in the family and that ... you’re working side-by-side, you’re sweating, you’re bleeding together and you’re accomplishing something. They’ve got a very nice home now,” Rodeman said.

During the dedication, in addition to getting the keys to their new home, each member of the Martinez was provided their own personalized, handmade quilt as well as their own bibles.

Adriana Martinez said having this home come along without all of the usual hefty costs would allow them to focus more on the education and future of their three kids.
