HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Clear the Shelters is more than halfway over. Local4 News has been taking part in the NBC Universal run campaign to help make a push for pet adoption in participating shelters.

One participant, Heartland Pet Connection in Hastings is looking to have one of their current longest staying residents adopted. The animal in need is 2-year-old Akita mix, Hattie. She was discovered as a stray roaming around Hastings and was taken into HPC around a year and a half ago.

Shelter Manager Jennie Theesen said Hattie has a notable personality.

“So happy, super loving, just really wants to be with people and I think that that’s something that, if you’re looking for a great dog that just wants to be with people and hangout with people, this would be a great girl,” Theesen said.

Theesen said Hattie has likely been at the shelter for the time she has due to restrictions some insurance agencies have on Akitas. Another reason she offered was the size of Hattie. Because she is a larger breed, she requires a bit more attention and exercise than a smaller dog.

Despite her needs and requirements, Theesen told Local4 News the shelter staff has been preparing Hattie for her future home.

“We know a lot about her for having her for that year and a half but, we’ve been put a lot of good obedience skills on her to get her started into her new home when she’s finally ready,” she noted.

Anyone interested in adopting Hattie can visit HPC Monday through Friday from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. or on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
