Melon Roast Car Show returns to Brickyard Park
HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - The Melon Roast Car Club show took over Hastings Brickyard Park Sunday, the annual event returning for its 13th year.
Around 250 vehicles were entered and put on display during the show, each one ranging in make, model, year, color and more. Cars, motorcycles, trucks and even vans were set up alongside the sidewalks through the park.
Rick Gotdel, president of the Melon Roasters Car Club told Local4 News there’s a reason the show has stuck around for more than a decade.
“The club members enjoy it and I think the local people and, you know, we get people from Kansas, Iowa, you know, other states, we go to their car shows and kind of promote it and… it’s laid back,” Gotdel said. “It’s a lot of fun.”
While the Melon Roasters hosted the event, anyone who wanted to enter a car was welcome to do so. Participants were given the opportunity to vote on vehicles for award categories such as best engine, best paint and best interior.
Putting on an annual car show isn’t the only thing the car club does for its community either. Gotdel said members give back to the community as much as they can, including helping to maintain the place they host the show each year.
“We do stuff for the park,” he noted. “We — some of our club members redid the picnic tables with lumber that was donated from J & M Steel… we put lights in it, try to make it a historic site.”
The show was held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Proceeds from this year’s Melon Roast show went to benefit the charity Nebraska Spina Bifida. The car club is also continuing their commitment to helping provide scholarships to Central Community College automotive students.
